UN Envoy Angelina Jolie Visits Pakistan's Flood-Ravaged Areas
Angelina Jolie, American actress and UN special envoy for refugees, arrived in Pakistan's Sindh province on September 20 to visit areas hit by the worst floods in the country's recent history.
The International Rescue Committee (IRC), a global humanitarian group, said Jolie's tour was a show of support for the affected Pakistanis and efforts to raise awareness of the situation, listen to victims and prevent future disasters.
Officials in Sindh said he first visited Dadu district, where he "talked to women and children about their problems and needs," said Niaz Ali official from RFE/RL in the city of Karachi.
Jolie previously served as UN special envoy in Pakistan following the deadly 2005 earthquake and 2010 floods.
Pakistani officials say about 1,500 people have died and many more have been left homeless by flooding that has followed intense monsoon rains and melting glaciers.
Humanitarian groups and experts warn that disease and lack of health care are the biggest threats today.
Floods cause hundreds of millions of dollars in infrastructure damage.
Pakistan and the United Nations have requested international assistance for reconstruction.
"Today Pakistan, tomorrow it could be your country, no matter where you live," Guterres said, echoing experts' warnings that climate change is likely to exacerbate natural disasters. "This is a global crisis ... it requires a global response."
